New York Vertical

Selbstverständlich bin ich nicht der Erste mit dieser Idee. Dennoch fand ich es reizvoll, bei meinem letzten New York Besuch im August 2018, Fotos für einen vertikalen Monatskalender aufzunehmen. Hier das Ergebnis (12 Monate und ein Titelbild).

Citi Field

Das Citi Field ist das Baseballstadion der New York Mets, es befindet sich in New York City im Borough Queens. Das 41.922 Sitzplätze umfassende Stadion wurde 2009 fertiggestellt und ersetzte das benachbarte Shea Stadium, das 1964 fast an gleicher Stelle erbaut worden war. Das von einer fast zweistündigen Gewitterpause unterbrochene Spiel der Mets am 7. August 2018 endete 6:1 für die Cincinatti Reds. Alle Statistiken zum Spiel sind unter https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN201808070.shtml zu finden.

(Fahrrad-) Einsatz in Manhattan

New York City, the “big apple”, the “city that never sleeps”, eine Stadt die eher für ihre orangefarbenen Taxis und silbernen Subway-Züge denn als Fahrradstadt bekannt ist. So war ich auch bei meinem dritten Besuch eher skeptisch, was das Radfahren in der Millionenmetropole am Hudson angeht. Doch in den letzten Jahren hat sich einiges getan: ein differenziertes Radwegenetz wurde geplant und umgesetzt, zudem wurde ein Leihradsystem aufgebaut, das sich bei Einheimischen und Besuchern einer wachsenden Popularität erfreut und sich – zumindest in den wärmeren Jahreszeiten – als ernstzunehmende Alternative zu ÖPNV und  Taxis etabliert hat.

Das Radwegenetz

Auf der Website des New Yorker Department of Transportation ist eine Karte des Radwegenetzes als PDF erhältlich. Gedruckte Faltkarten bekommt man an verschiedenen Ausgabestellen in New York oder kostenlos per Post (4-6 Wochen Lieferzeit nach Europa einkalkulieren!).

Lessons learnt

Entscheidender Faktor für den Erfolg des Leihradsystems ist m.E. die hohe Dichte der Stationen. In Manhattan und den angrenzenden Teilen der anderen Boroughs findet man ein eng geknüpftes Netz an Docks, das den Stadtraum komplett abdeckt.
