New Paltz

In der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts finden sich die ersten Hinweise auf Auswanderungen aus der Pfalz nach Übersee. Hugenotten und Mennoniten, die erst einige Jahre oder Jahrzehnte in der Pfalz gelebt hatten, waren die Vorreiter. Abraham Hasbrouck vom Deutschhof bei Bergzabern ließ sich 1675 mit mehreren hugenottischen Familien im Tal des Hudson in der englischen Kolonie New York nieder. Schon 1660 hatte sich sein Bruder, der aus Calais stammende Jean Hasbrouck, nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in der Kurpfalz, zusammen mit dem aus dem Artois gebürtigen Mannheimer Bürger Mathieu Planchan und dessen Schwiegersohn Louis du Bois (Dubois) in Hurley am Hudson angesiedelt. 1677 kauften Abraham Hasbrouck und andere hugenottische Familien ein Stück Land und bauten sich hier eine Siedlung. In Erinnerung an ihre Zwischenheimat, die ihnen als Flüchtlinge Gastfreundschaft gewährt hatte, nannten sie ihre Gründung “New Paltz”.

Niagara Falls

Ausflug zu den Niagara-Fällen am 7. Mai 2016.  Die Niagarafälle sind Wasserfälle des Niagara River an der Grenze zwischen dem US-amerikanischen Bundesstaat New York und der kanadischen Provinz Ontario. Der Fluß verbindet den Eriesee mit dem Ontariosee. Die Inseln Luna Island und Goat Island spalten die Fälle in drei Teile: Die American Falls und die kleineren Bridal Veil Falls, die ausschließlich innerhalb der USA liegen und die Horseshoe Falls, durch den die Grenze zwischen den USA und Kanada verläuft. Die American Falls haben eine Kantenlänge von 260 m, die Horseshoe Falls eine von 670 m. Das Wasser der American Falls fällt über eine Kante von 21 bis 34 m Höhe auf eine Sturzhalde, die bei einem Felssturz 1954 entstand. Die Horseshoe Falls haben eine freie Fallhöhe von 57 m. Schiffe umfahren die Fälle durch den zwölf Kilometer westlich liegenden, 43,4 km langen Wellandkanal. Der Wasserdurchfluss des Niagara Rivers beträgt durchschnittlich 5750 m³/s, wobei am Tag mindestens 2832 m³/s (etwa ein Viertel bis die Hälfte der gesamten Wassermassen) die Fälle hinunterstürzen. Die Wasserfälle werden nachts auf mindestens 1416 m³/s gedrosselt. Die verbleibende Wassermasse wird über ein Stauwehr für die Stromgewinnung umgeleitet.

Yankee Stadium

Besuch im Baseballstadion der New York Yankees am 14. Mai 2016. Das Stadion liegt im Süden der Bronx. Es wurde am 3. April 2009 eröffnet und ersetzte das alte Yankee Stadium von 1923, das bis zum 13. Mai 2010 abgerissen wurde. Die Heimstätte der Yankees bietet zu Baseballspielen 49.642 Plätze. Das Spiel gegen die Chicago White Sox endete 2:1.
